My general recommendation is to add about 20% worm castings to the soil or potting mix.
For potted plants, this works best when initially filling the pot, but you can also mix in worm castings around the roots of an already-potted plant.
For adding transplants to gardens or starting seeds directly in the garden, mix in worm castings at a similar ratio that’s proportional to the hole you’re planting in, or else for general soil improvement, spread 1 pound of worm castings over every 10 square feet and then till or mix into the soil.
For lawns, spread 1 pound of worm castings over every 10 square feet before rain or watering so that the life and micronutrients in the worm castings can transfer into the soil.
Store worm castings at room temperature, as the microorganisms within them may go dormant or die in freezing temperatures. Worm castings are best when used fresh but do have a decent shelf life. Stored properly in breathable containers, worm castings can maintain their quality for months and can still be usable even after a year. The buckets we sell them in are ideal, while the kraft bags are less than ideal but still breathable.
We’d be happy to take back your worm castings container and reuse it. Feel free to drop it off at our door anytime, and we’ll take care of it. Otherwise please use them for something else or recycle them.
No, it’s unlikely that they’re bad. One of the greatest benefits of worm castings is that they’re full of life, including microorganisms like bacteria, fungi and protozoa that help make the nutrients in your soil more accessible to your plants. We try to limit the presence of larger organisms to help alleviate questions or concerns, but if you’re seeing something in your worm castings, it’s likely one of two things, both of which are harmless to humans:
- Springtails: These tiny white creatures are very common in worm composting and are definitely visible – they seem to jump around if disturbed. They’re beneficial in helping break down organic matter and generally work alongside our worms. They like environments with higher moisture, which is actually a great sign for worm castings, so you may find them hanging around the top sides or lid of your container where moisture collects.
- Mites: These tiny creatures are also very common in worm composting and can come in a variety of colors, but we’ve mostly noticed darker red or brown mites in our worm compost. Like springtails, they are beneficial consumers of organic matter and tend to show up in castings that have higher moisture content. So they’re most likely to be spotted on top of your stored worm castings or around the sides and lid of your container.
